📖 The Luna He Left in the Snow
Chapter 32: Blood on the Snow Ledger
The bond snapped like ice under a blade.
Nora felt it in her teeth, her bones, the old bruised place inside her wolf where Rowan's name had once lived. Pain came first. Then silence.
Then room.
She staggered.
Darius caught her with one hand at her back, careful as always, even while his eyes burned silver.
Across the hall, Rowan dropped to one knee.
His face had gone bloodless.
The second rejection had not humiliated him.
It had hurt.
Nora was not proud of the small satisfaction that gave her. She simply let herself have it.
Seraphine applauded softly.
"Beautiful," she said. "Now the debt matures."
Venn slammed the law book shut. "Explain."
Seraphine gestured to Cassian, who placed a black ledger on the Council table. "Blackridge's debt contract included a mate-failure clause. If a crown-line wife rejected the Alpha after producing or carrying an heir, Thornveil gains claim to the disputed succession assets until repayment."
Rowan looked up. "You said the clause was symbolic."
"You hear what comforts you."
Nora straightened despite the ache. "My child is not an asset."
"No," Seraphine agreed. "Your child is the source of assets."
Darius's hand left Nora's back. The room seemed to lose temperature.
Seraphine finally looked at him. "Kill me and my house publishes every contract before your Council can review them. Thousands of wolves will panic. Packs will riot. You will spend your reign drowning in civil claims while the child grows vulnerable."
"You assume I need to kill you quickly," Darius said.
Seraphine's smile held, but her pulse fluttered at her throat.
Nora saw it.
So did Maeve.
"The ledger is forged," Maeve said from behind Nora.
Every head turned.
Maeve walked forward slowly, still pale from her wounds but steady. "Not the whole thing. Just the mate-failure clause."
Seraphine's eyes cooled. "And a maid knows this how?"
Maeve placed a thin account slip beside the black ledger. "Because I cleaned Elder Callum's office the night he copied the old debt book. He spilled sealing ink on page forty-two. See? Thornveil's copy has no stain."
Venn seized the ledger.
Callum, who had been sweating quietly beside the guards, made a broken sound.
Nora turned to him. "You added the clause."
Callum's mouth worked. No words came.
Seraphine looked at him with contempt. "Fool."
That was all it took.
Callum broke.
"Rowan ordered me to hide the first debt structure," he gasped. "I added the mate clause later because Thornveil demanded collateral. Iris carried messages. I never touched the child clause. I swear."
Rowan surged against his guards. "Liar."
"You signed every page," Callum shouted. "Every page."
Venn's clerks moved fast. The black ledger, the stained slip, and Callum's testimony entered record before Seraphine could smooth the room back into obedience.
For the first time, Thornveil's perfect arrival cracked.
But Nora knew better than to think cornered power became harmless.
Seraphine closed the velvet box she had brought and set it on the table.
"Then we proceed without contracts."
Darius stepped between her and Nora.
Seraphine smiled at him.
"Blood has older doors than law, Lycan King."
The box opened by itself.
Inside lay a small silver knife wrapped in Nora's mother's hair.
