📖 The Luna He Left in the Snow
Chapter 30: The Heir They Cannot Name
The Council tried to seal the baby's name before Nora chose one.
They did it with ceremony, which only made the theft prettier.
Three clerks brought a silver cradle into the hearing hall. Empty, of course, but draped with Blackridge cloth and Frosthold white. Venn looked uncomfortable. The older Councilors did not. They had discovered a problem and reached for ritual before conscience.
"The unborn claimant requires provisional designation," Councilor Marr said. "For legal protection."
Nora stood very still. "You mean a name."
"A legal designation."
"Chosen by whom?"
Marr avoided her eyes. "By Council necessity."
Darius stepped forward. "No."
The word cracked across the hall.
Marr stiffened. "Your Majesty, the designation protects succession records."
"It protects your ability to discuss the child without asking the mother."
A few younger clerks looked down quickly.
Nora walked to the empty cradle. The cloth was beautiful. That made her hate it more. Blackridge wanted blood. Frosthold wanted protection. The Council wanted order. Thornveil wanted ownership. Everyone had a reason to touch the child before the child had drawn breath.
She placed one hand over her stomach.
The baby moved.
Not sharply this time.
Like an answer waiting for her courage to catch up.
"When I was married," Nora said, "Rowan told me any son would carry Vale. Any daughter would be used to mend alliances. He said names were how packs remembered power."
Rowan, seated under guard, looked away.
"My mother gave me Ashford," Nora continued. "I used to think it was the name of people who had lost. Ash for what burned. Ford for the shallow place everyone crossed over."
She looked at Darius.
"Now I think she knew something."
Darius's face softened in the smallest way.
Nora turned back to the Council. "My child will not be named by a Council cradle, a rejected father, a debt contract, or a crown-hungry house."
Marr said, "A designation is still required."
"Then write this: Child of Nora Ashford, protected under Frost law, unclaimed by Blackridge until the mother gives consent."
"That is irregular."
"So was poisoning me."
Someone coughed. It sounded like a laugh strangled into respect.
Marr bristled. "Legal naming cannot be delayed forever."
"Good thing forever is not today."
The baby kicked.
Hard.
Nora gasped.
Darius was beside her instantly, one hand hovering. "Nora?"
The cradle cloth lifted by itself.
Every candle bent toward Nora. The silver cradle trembled, then slid across the floor away from the Council table and stopped at her feet.
The hall froze.
Nora stared down at it.
The message was obvious enough for even Councilor Marr.
The child did not reject protection.
The child rejected distance.
Darius knelt and lifted the cradle cloth. Beneath it, burned into the wood, appeared a crescent mark and one word in old script.
Wait.
Venn exhaled. "The record will show the crown-moon claimant rejects provisional naming."
"The record," Nora said, "will show the child has a mother."
Outside the hall, bells began to ring.
Not alarm.
Announcement.
A messenger ran in, snow on his shoulders. "Frosthold scouts found House Thornveil's main caravan crossing the southern pass."
Darius rose.
The messenger swallowed. "Lady Seraphine Thornveil is with them. She requests audience with Nora Ashford by name."
