📖 The Luna He Left in the Snow
Chapter 12: The Moon Answers Blood
The blood-and-ledger audit began at sunset.
Councilor Venn ordered the central chamber cleared of spectators, which did nothing to soften the humiliation. Every ranked Alpha remained. Every legal clerk remained. Iris remained because the disputed account bore her name, though she looked as if she had swallowed glass.
Nora stood at the witness table with Darius to her left and the evidence case between them. The case was leather, cold under her fingertips. The room smelled of old paper and the wax seals that broke one by one.
Rowan stood opposite.
Not beside Iris.
Nora noticed. So did Iris. Rowan's jaw was tight, his hands clasped behind his back as if he held himself still by force.
Good.
The first ledger proved what Nora already knew. The transfer order had moved winter sanctuary funds into Iris Bell's dowry trust six weeks before the rejection. The second ledger proved the receiving account had been opened by Elder Callum's clerk. The third proved the storm loss had never existed.
Then came the signature.
Nora's false name stared up from the page.
Nora Vale.
The chief clerk set a second document beside it. The restriction order Nora had hidden under the Luna sitting room hearth had been retrieved by Frost agents at noon under Council warrant.
Rowan's own signature gleamed at the bottom.
It barred Nora from authorizing external transfers.
Darius leaned close enough for his breath to warm her ear. "Well hidden."
"Men who think women live by the hearth rarely check beneath it."
His mouth twitched.
Councilor Venn read the restriction order twice. "Alpha Vale, why would a transfer requiring Nora Vale's authorization occur after you legally restricted her ability to authorize transfers?"
Rowan said, "I will need to review the dates."
"You may review them while answering."
A clerk coughed into his sleeve.
Elder Callum was sweating. A bead ran from his temple down his cheek. He didn't wipe it.
Iris suddenly stood. "This is absurd. I never touched pack funds."
Nora turned to her. "No. You spent them."
Iris's eyes filled with tears on command. "How can you hate me so much?"
Nora felt strangely calm. "Practice."
The tears faltered.
Councilor Venn lifted the silver baby blanket from its evidence wrapping. The fabric caught the lamplight. Cold and fine.
"And this item?" Venn said.
Iris went pale.
"A threat sent through Council courier channel to Frosthold," Darius said.
"No," Iris whispered.
The clerk beside Venn read the ribbon aloud.
"Little heir, little lie. Snow hides many small graves."
This time, no one murmured. Some words were too ugly to decorate with shock.
Rowan looked at Iris.
The look was not loving.
"You sent that?" he asked.
Iris's mouth opened. Closed. Her throat worked as if she tried to swallow the words back.
Nora watched the exact second Iris understood Rowan would sacrifice her if it saved him.
Welcome, sister, she thought. That is what his love is worth.
Iris turned on Nora. "You ruined everything because you could not accept being unwanted."
Darius moved.
Nora touched his sleeve before he could step forward. The wool was warm under her fingers.
He stopped.
She faced Iris alone.
"I accepted being unwanted when I walked out of the ceremony. I accepted being humiliated when I left my mother's necklace on the floor. I even accepted that Rowan loved power more than he loved me."
Her voice carried through the chamber.
"What I will not accept is you threatening my child because you want to wear blue."
The word child entered the record like a bell.
Rowan inhaled sharply.
Darius went still.
Nora had not planned to say it.
But as the chamber stared at her, fear did not come.
Only relief.
There. The child existed because Nora said so. Not because Rowan permitted it. Not because Iris failed to burn enough paper. Not because a Council found the correct form.
Because Nora stood alive and named the truth.
Councilor Venn's eyes softened for less than a second. Then law returned.
"Frost sanctuary remains in effect pending succession review."
Rowan stepped forward. "If she carries my child..."
"You will speak when recognized," Venn said.
He stopped.
Before anyone else could move, the old moon relic at the center of the chamber began to glow.
It was a ceremonial thing, a flat black stone set into silver claws, older than the hall itself. Nora had seen it at ceremonies and thought it dead decoration.
Now light spread across it.
Thin.
Silver.
Shaped like a crescent crown.
Every wolf in the chamber felt it. Nora knew because every head turned toward her before she understood why.
Her hand had gone to her stomach. Beneath her palm, warmth answered. Not pain. Recognition. A pulse that matched the growing light.
Iris backed away so fast her chair fell. The sound cracked the silence.
Elder Callum whispered, "Impossible."
Rowan stared at Nora with hunger and horror. His hands unclasped, reaching.
Darius looked at the glowing relic, then at Nora, and for the first time since she had met him, the Lycan King seemed shaken. His breath caught. His hand came to rest on the small of her back, steady.
Councilor Venn rose slowly.
"The audit is suspended."
Nora's pulse thundered.
Venn's gaze dropped to Nora's stomach.
"The Winter Council recognizes a crown-moon response."
The chamber erupted.
Rowan lunged forward. Frost guards moved faster. Darius stepped between him and Nora with a growl that shook dust from the rafters.
Nora did not move.
She looked past Darius, past Rowan, past Iris's ruined face, to the moon relic shining for a child no one had wanted alive. The light cast silver across the floor.
Her baby was no longer a secret.
Her baby was a claim.
And every pack in the north had just seen it wake.
