📖 The Luna He Left in the Snow
Chapter 10: Under Frost Protection
The Winter Council had survived border wars, broken mate bonds, succession murders, and a poisoned wedding cake.
Still, Nora had never heard it go this quiet.
The silence had a scent--cold stone, nervous sweat, the metallic tang of hunger. Every wolf in the hall turned toward her stomach. Every old law woke in men who had ignored her pain until it might affect inheritance.
Rowan's face changed first. He saw the trap before the words landed. If Iris accused pregnancy in public, he had two choices: deny knowledge and lose claim, or admit suspicion and explain why he'd tried to make Nora sign away expected succession rights.
For once, Iris had moved too quickly for him.
Nora almost thanked her.
Almost.
Elder Callum stood. "This is indecent speculation."
Darius's voice cut colder. "Then sit down before it becomes testimony."
Callum sat.
Iris kept smiling. "I only ask because my sister appears under the Lycan King's personal protection after disappearing from her rightful pack. If there is no hidden condition, why object?"
The room leaned toward Nora.
Her child--smaller than a plum, softer than a breath--had become a political weapon in less than a minute.
She had known it would happen. Knowing did not stop the fury coiling in her chest.
Darius stepped forward. Every guard straightened.
"Nora Ashford is under Frost sanctuary," he said. "Her body, medical condition, private records, and future claims are not open to public inspection by a woman currently accused of receiving stolen funds."
Iris flushed--a hot, ugly red that spread from her throat to her cheeks.
Rowan recovered. "No one is requesting inspection."
"Good."
"But if Nora carries a Blackridge child," Rowan said carefully, "then Blackridge has rights."
The old wound opened wider. Nora's ribs ached where she'd once kept bruises.
"You rejected me."
"I rejected a marriage that had failed the pack."
"You rejected me."
His gaze hardened. "Do not twist law."
"I learned from you."
Murmurs rose. The chief clerk struck his staff once. "Order."
Nora drew a breath. She wanted to scream that Rowan did not deserve to say child, did not deserve to know, did not deserve anything from the life he had thrown into a storm.
But subscription to rage was expensive. Every word had to earn its place.
She faced the Council bench.
"I will not answer questions about my body to satisfy Iris Bell's curiosity."
Iris's eyes flashed.
"I will answer legal claims. Alpha Rowan rejected me before witnesses and sent documents requiring me to swear no existing or expected child had claim on Blackridge. Those documents were delivered to Frosthold and burned unread by Blackridge law, but witnessed by Frost guards."
"You burned them?" the chief clerk asked faintly.
"After reading them."
Darius said, "Frosthold can provide witness statements."
The clerk began writing.
Rowan's control frayed. "Nora, those documents were standard separation terms."
"Then standard terms attempted to erase a hypothetical child before you knew whether one existed."
The hall caught the logic. Nora watched it pass from face to face--if there was no child, why demand denial? If there was a child, why reject her first? If Rowan had not known, who told him to add expected claim?
Iris's smile was gone.
Nora pressed before fear could return.
"I request three things. First, immediate delay of Iris Bell's Luna recognition. Second, blood-and-ledger audit of the disputed transfer order. Third, preservation of all Blackridge documents relating to my rejection, Luna property transfer, and succession denial."
Elder Callum stood again. "This is outrageous."
Darius looked bored. "You used that one already."
A few Alphas laughed. Callum reddened.
The chief clerk looked to the senior Councilor--a white-haired woman named Mara Venn who had not spoken once. She sat beneath the central moon window, braid draped over one shoulder, eyes sharp enough to cut thread.
Councilor Venn looked at Nora.
"You understand, Lady Ashford, that requesting audit places your own conduct under review as well."
Nora held her gaze. "Yes."
"You may not enjoy what is found."
"I have not enjoyed much this week."
The old woman's mouth twitched.
Then she looked at Rowan. "Alpha Vale, do you oppose a delay?"
"I oppose slander."
"That was not the question."
Rowan's jaw worked. Nora knew him well enough to see the trap. If he opposed too hard, he looked guilty. If he agreed, Iris's recognition stalled.
Iris gripped his sleeve.
Rowan did not look at her.
"Blackridge has nothing to hide," he said finally.
Nora almost smiled.
Councilor Venn nodded. "Then recognition of Iris Bell as Luna is delayed pending preliminary audit."
The staff struck stone.
Iris made a small sound, quickly swallowed.
Nora let herself breathe once.
Once.
Because Rowan was looking at her now with no softness left. Not even the false kind.
His gaze dropped to her stomach.
This time, it stayed--and Nora felt her own hand rise, without permission, pressing flat against the fabric of her dress.
