📖 Blue Orchard Witness Rail
Rail Paint Chip at Harbor Worksite 056
The Harbor Worksite shuttle lane had already been changed to restricted maintenance by the time Mira reached the chain-link gate. Rain ran down the orange plastic strips and blurred the white sign behind them, but the fresh black marker was clear: FIRST AID ANNEX INTAKE DRAWER CLOSED BY HAZARD HOLD. Pike stood beyond the chain with the courier lockbox pressed against his thigh, speaking to a worker in a yellow hood who kept one hand on the annex door.
"He got here first," Tessa said.
Sienna held the Room 417 seal under her coat without hiding it. The red keycard stayed between two fingers, visible to the gate camera but not near the reader. "Then we make them read why."
Mira lifted the Hospital Records strip against the mesh. The paper was already damp at the edge. "Rail Paint Intake Fifty-Six was named by Hospital Records before this hold went up. HBI-5 source comparison required before badge closeout or hotel support clearance. Open the annex drawer."
The worker did not move. His badge read LEN BAIRD, and his eyes went to Pike before they came back to Mira. "Hazard hold means no drawer access without worksite command."
"Hazard hold after a medical field prompt is not command," Mira said. "It is timing."
Pike raised the lockbox a few inches. "This box carries the clean support sample already logged as disputed. The worksite can preserve it without letting a claimant's hospital badge chain contaminate construction evidence."
Sienna stepped to the yellow line painted outside the gate. "Do not call my presence contamination."
Holt's voice cut through Pike's phone again, thinner under the rain. "Mira, the hotel is still carrying a room support request. If the worksite will mark the clean sample preserved, we can hold the room safely and return to the hearing process."
"You tried to return to process by making her seal look released," Noah said. He stood beside the gate post with his phone angled down, recording to local storage only. "Local copy only. No Ledger login. Say the condition again."
Sienna looked into the worksite camera. "Room 417 seal object-present. Release not granted. Hotel support clearance cannot resume through HBI-5."
Len swallowed. Pike said, "She is not inside the annex. The comparison needs annex consent."
"No," Mira said. She slid three strips through the gap under the gate: the Hospital Records HBI-5 field state, the Chapter Forty-Eight rail paint source confirmation, and the Medical Tag Forty-Six C-7D copy. "It needs source comparison. You do not need her seal. You need to prove whether the clean support sample matches the field that tried to close her out."
Rusk arrived breathless from the second shuttle, umbrella turned inside out. "This is derivative medical material. Worksite staff cannot process HBI-5 next to a claimant without privacy counsel."
Jalen caught the gate before the wind slammed it against Tessa's shoulder. "Counsel does not get to turn a drawer into a hiding place."
Len looked at the annex door. Behind its wire-glass pane, a small printer light pulsed amber. "The drawer is already requesting a field code."
Pike's expression hardened. "Do not answer it."
Mira put her hand flat on the wet mesh. "Read it."
Len crossed to the door slowly, as if each step might cost him his job. He typed through the rain cover. The annex printer gave one hard clack. He tore off the label and stared at it.
"Out loud," Sienna said.
Len's voice dropped. "Rail Paint Intake Fifty-Six. HBI-5 source comparison pending. Compare with HBI-4, Medical Tag Forty-Six C-7D, Rail Paint Intake Forty-Eight, prior HBI-3 attachment, and clean support sample marked authorship disputed."
Pike moved toward the annex door. Jalen pushed the gate shut between them. "You are carrying the last item," he said.
"I am preserving it," Pike said.
"Then preserve it in view," Tessa answered.
For a moment only the rain spoke. Then Mira pointed to the workbench visible through the annex window. "Put the box on the bench. Len, open the drawer first. The clean sample goes second, after the source field is visible."
Rusk's umbrella snapped loose and skittered across the lane. He did not chase it. "If this continues, every worker in this annex is exposing protected medical material."
Sienna lifted the red keycard higher. The camera clicked. "Nobody here is asking who died. I am asking who tried to make me disappear while I was standing here."
Len opened the annex drawer. Inside, sealed under a clear sleeve, lay a blue-white paint chip no larger than a fingernail, with a yellow hospital tab caught in the dried edge. The first printed line beneath it read HBI-5 FIELD ATTACHMENT. The second read CLAIMANT OBJECT-PRESENT / RELEASE NOT GRANTED.
Noah inhaled. "It was attached here before the clean sample."
Mira did not let herself look away from Pike. "Set the box down."
Pike set it down with enough force to make the bench ring. Len broke the worksite seal while the gate camera watched. The clean support sample inside was not blue-white. It was a polished gray strip with a typed tag: SUPPORT CLEARANCE SAMPLE - HOLT RECEIVER DESK SAFE MATCH.
Holt whispered from the phone, "That is a receiver confirmation strip."
"Not a source chip," Mira said.
Len fed the source chip sleeve into the comparison reader, then the gray strip. The machine hummed. Amber went white, then red. The refusal label printed so quickly it slapped the tray.
SOURCE MISMATCH. CLEAN SUPPORT SAMPLE DOES NOT MATCH HBI-5 FIELD ATTACHMENT. RECEIVER DESK SAFE MATCH PREPARED FOR HOTEL SUPPORT CLEARANCE ONLY. NOT VALID FOR BADGE FIELD CLOSEOUT.
Sienna's mouth opened without sound. Tessa caught her elbow but did not pull her back.
Rusk said, "That only means the samples have different uses."
Len fed in the Chapter Forty-Eight confirmation and the HBI-4 strip. The reader paused longer this time. Through the glass, Mira saw Pike's hand tighten on the empty lockbox handle. The second label came out in two parts.
HBI-5 FIELD ATTACHMENT MATCHES RAIL PAINT INTAKE FORTY-EIGHT SOURCE FAMILY. PRIOR HBI-4 AND MEDICAL TAG FORTY-SIX C-7D PRESERVED. CLEAN SUPPORT SAMPLE PREPARED OUTSIDE SOURCE FAMILY. AUTHORSHIP DISPUTE ESCALATES TO WITNESS RAIL.
"There," Noah said quietly.
Holt's phone line stayed open, but no one at the receiver desk spoke.
Mira collected the labels through the gate slot in order. HBI-5 object-present. Rail Paint Fifty-Six source match. Clean support sample outside source family. Witness rail escalation. She handed none of them to Rusk. "Pike brought a hotel support sample to close a badge field that never matched it."
Pike looked past her to Sienna. "You still need the hotel to keep the room."
Sienna wiped rain from the red keycard with her thumb. "I need the tribunal to see what you used to keep it."
Len's printer clicked one more time. He tore the final label without waiting for Pike. "Blue Receipt at Tribunal Room Fifty-Seven," he read. "Produce HBI-5 source comparison and disputed clean-sample path before witness rail. Claimant object-present. Release not granted. Receiver desk safe match not valid for badge closeout."
Mira folded the label into the dry center of her file. Beyond the gate, the tribunal shuttle had just turned into the worksite lane with its blue roof light on. Pike saw it, too. He reached for the empty lockbox, but Sienna had already stepped to the gate camera and raised the red keycard beside the seal.
"Let the rail watch him carry nothing," she said.
