📖 Thirty-One Hours After Class
Employer Reference Pause
Dory called before Tessa reached the bus stop.
"Tell me why Maple Road's workforce office just asked whether my employee reference for you should be held under integrity review."
The commons noise fell away behind Tessa. She stepped under the overhang with the breakfast packet pressed flat against her folder. "They contacted you already?"
"A woman from Human Resources Verification did. Calm voice. Bad words." Dory's diner roar filled the background, plates and grill and someone calling for rye toast. "She asked whether I could confirm continued good standing while a workforce integrity matter was pending. I told her you showed up for work even when your shoes were wet and your life was on fire."
Tessa closed her eyes. "Dory."
"Don't Dory me. She said the clinic reference may stay paused until Maple Road sends final standing. Is that the thing you just refused to smile about?"
Tessa looked through the glass doors. Mercer was still near the photo wall, talking to a county badge as if the packet in Tessa's folder did not exist. "Yes."
"Then get here. Bring only what has your name on it. I am not letting my diner become a rumor board."
Dory had the reference email printed and clipped to the order rail when Tessa arrived. The lunch rush had not started, but every booth smelled like coffee and impatience. A man in a brown cap sat at the counter with a crossword, his hearing aid shining behind one ear.
"Office phone, not personal," Dory said before Tessa asked. "I wrote the time down. I did not promise a thing."
Tessa read the email with both hands on the paper so they would not shake. Verification pause requested pending Maple Road Workforce Integrity Review. Candidate employment reference may be limited to dates and role until final program standing. Source: Dean's Office Workforce Success Liaison.
"Registrar did not send that," Tessa said.
"No. That is why I printed it." Dory leaned close enough that only Tessa could hear. "You can have a copy. You do not get my whole inbox. You do not name my night cook. You do not post my counter on Facebook."
"I won't." Tessa slid out her folder: the place card, her printed success sidebar, the MR-31 ledger, the Room 214 lock ticket, Marian's childcare wording, Henley's make-up note. No order-pad initials. No P.O. No K.R. "This is mine."
Dory's mouth pressed thin as she read the success profile. "They printed you as a completion while asking me if you're under review."
"Yes."
"That is dirty."
The man in the brown cap said without looking up, "It is also familiar."
Dory snapped, "Rowan, if you are about to tell a story, buy pie."
He folded the crossword exactly in half. "I will buy pie. I heard `Workforce Success Liaison` and `integrity review` because your voices are not as private as you think." He turned on the stool. His face was lined, his shirt collar buttoned wrong, his eyes very awake. "I was a county grant auditor before they retired me into boredom. May I ask one question?"
Tessa pulled the folder closer. "If it is about another student's record, no."
"Good." His smile was brief. "Do not ever bring me another student's record. Is that email about you?"
"Yes."
"Is the packet about you?"
"Yes."
"Then you can ask why the same office can certify you as a completion profile while asking an employer to limit your reference. That contradiction is not a privacy problem. It is a governance problem."
Dory set a slice of cherry pie in front of him harder than necessary. "Eat before you audit my counter."
Rowan picked up the fork but did not eat. "The phrase `final program standing` is not registrar language. It is outcome-reporting language. Someone is protecting a metric, not checking attendance."
Tessa felt the packet's glossy edge under her thumb. "Can you tell who?"
"Not from that. Do not guess." Rowan tapped the printed source line with the back of the fork, never touching the paper itself. "Ask for the communication log for your own learner ID between Dean's Office Workforce Success Liaison and employer verification. Ask for the public board packet that defines completion profile criteria. If they used your name in a success packet, they have a criteria document."
"And if they refuse?"
"Then the refusal is a record too."
Dory crossed her arms. "Can that get her reference unpaused?"
"Maybe not today." Rowan looked at Tessa, not at Dory. "But it can stop them from pretending the pause came from a clerk who lost a form."
The diner bell rang. A lunch customer stepped in, glanced at Tessa's folder, and then looked quickly away. The rumor had followed her here too, but this time Dory planted herself between the counter and the door.
"Tessa works tonight," Dory said loudly enough for the room. "That is the only employment statement coming from this diner until Maple Road puts its request in proper writing."
Tessa swallowed hard. "Thank you."
"Do not thank me yet. If a county person calls again, I am giving dates and role only. I am not lying for you and I am not lying about you." Dory pointed at the email. "But I will not let them make my silence sound like guilt."
Rowan finally took a bite of pie. "Board minutes," he said after swallowing. "The adult learner success criteria should have gone through workforce board minutes. If `thirty-one support completions` is in that packet, the old language will be there somewhere."
Tessa looked at the printed email, then at the breakfast packet, then at the clock over the pie case. Monday childcare. Monday practicum. Friday photo wall. Every clock in her life was becoming a record.
"Where do I ask?"
Rowan wrote an address on the back of a clean guest check and slid it across the counter. "County workforce board clerk. Public packet request. Your own name, completion profile criteria, and Dean's Office Workforce Success Liaison. Keep it narrow."
Tessa folded the guest check into her folder. Behind her, the diner bell rang again, and Dory said, "If you are here to eat, sit. If you are here to ask whether my waitress is a fraud, leave."
For the first time all morning, someone else made the room choose its side.
