Snow blurred the world into white noise as Ava stumbled out of the house, one hand clutching her belly, the other gripping the railing so tightly her knuckles burned. Pain pulsed through her abdomen—sharp, wrong, terrifying. Ethan wasn’t behind her. He hadn’t even followed when she’d whispered, “I need to go. Something’s wrong.” Instead, his mother’s voice had echoed down the hall: “She’s fine, Ethan. Don’t let her manipulate you.” Manipulate. The word still rang in Ava’s skull like a slap. Her breath fogged the air. Snowflakes stung her cheeks. The street was empty, the world swallowed by the storm. She took one step, then another— “Ava?” A strong arm caught her just before her knees buckled. Officer Carter Hale’s face came into focus beneath the streetlamp, snow dusting his dark hair and patrol jacket. His eyes widened when he saw the blood slowly darkening her leggings. “Jesus—Ava. You’re bleeding.” His voice was low, steady, but urgent. Protective. “I—I need… help,” she choked out. “I’ve got you.” He lifted her before she could collapse. “Hold on.” The next minutes blurred into sirens, swirling lights, Carter’s voice telling her to breathe, to stay awake, to keep talking. Not once did she hear Ethan’s voice. Not once did she see him running after her. The absence carved something hollow inside her chest. The ER was bright and loud—nurses rushing, monitors beeping, the scent of antiseptic heavy in the air. Carter was the one who carried her inside, shouting for a doctor. A nurse whisked Ava away, and Carter gave her a reassuring nod before she disappeared behind double doors. Hours—or maybe minutes—later, a doctor finally emerged. “The baby is stable for now,” he said. “But she needs rest and monitoring.” Relief hit Ava so hard her eyes stung. She covered her face, shaking. But the moment was ripped away by the shrill, cutting voice she dreaded most. “She staged this.” Carolyn’s heels clicked against the linoleum like gunshots. Lilah followed close behind, perfectly made-up despite the blizzard outside. Carolyn sniffed dramatically. “Honestly, bleeding over a tiny bump? She’s always had a flair for theatrics.” Lilah leaned toward the nearest nurse, lowering her voice just enough to be heard: “She’s been… emotionally unstable for months. You know how some pregnant women get.” Ava froze. Her pulse roared in her ears. “Stop,” she croaked. “Stop lying about me.” Carolyn turned with a pitying smile so poisonous it could kill. “Ava, sweet girl, no one is lying. We’re concerned for you.” “You burned her with scalding soup,” Ava snapped. “You pushed me.” Lilah’s eyebrows flew up. “Are you accusing me of assault now?” She shot the nurse a look. “See? Delusional.” Ava’s stomach twisted—not from pain, but from a fear colder than the snow outside. “Where’s Ethan?” she whispered. As if summoned, he rushed down the hall—snow in his hair, breathless, frantic. For one suspended second, their eyes met. Ava thought—hoped—she saw guilt. Fear. Something human. Then Carolyn stepped in front of him. “She’s exaggerating again,” she murmured, loud enough for Ava to hear. “She needs help, Ethan. Real help.” Lilah added, “If she keeps this up, she’ll hurt the baby.” Ava’s mouth opened, horrified. “What—?!” Ethan hesitated. One heartbeat. Two. Then he looked away. Just… looked away. Like her pain was an inconvenience. Like her fear was embarrassing him. Like his family’s lies were easier to swallow than the truth. Something inside Ava cracked. Not loudly. Not dramatically. Just a quiet, final fracture— the kind that doesn’t heal the same. She turned her face toward the wall, fighting tears, fighting the urge to scream. Behind her, Carter appeared, silent as a shadow but solid as iron. He stepped between Ava and the family, his badge gleaming beneath the fluorescent lights. “That’s enough,” he said, voice calm but edged with steel. “Any more harassment, and you’ll be removed from the hospital.” Carolyn’s eyes flashed. Lilah scoffed. Ethan looked like he wanted to disappear. But Carter didn’t move. Didn’t flinch. Didn’t leave her side. Ava finally exhaled, a cold, broken breath. Her baby was safe. For now. But her marriage? Her trust? Her heart? They were bleeding in ways a doctor couldn’t fix.
