The notification popped up while I was pouring milk into my coffee. A tiny ping. Innocent. Harmless. Except nothing in my life was harmless anymore. I wiped my hands on a dish towel and picked up my phone, expecting a text from Natalie or Vanessa. Instead, I saw Victor’s name. “Victor Ward issues official statement regarding allegations.” My blood turned cold. I clicked it. The article loaded instantly—of course it did, vultures always fly fast—and there, centered in bold black letters, was Victor’s rebuttal. “Renee Collins’ accusations are malicious, unfounded, and deeply disappointing. Her claims are a distortion of the truth, stemming from personal grievances rather than reality.” My throat tightened. I kept reading even though every word hit like a shove to the chest. “I have always supported Renee emotionally and financially. Her recent behavior has forced me to consult my legal team. I hope she finds the help she needs, but I cannot allow fabricated narratives to damage my reputation or the company I’ve built with integrity.” Fabricated. Help she needs. Malicious. Unfounded. He didn’t just deny everything— He made me the unstable one. The emotional one. The problem. The mug in my hand trembled, and hot coffee sloshed over the rim, burning my wrist. I barely felt it. I scrolled further. A statement from his PR team, photos of him shaking hands with investors, smiling like the perfect partner, the perfect entrepreneur, the perfect man the world wanted him to be. And here I was—painted as a vengeful, spiraling woman with a bruised ego. My heart pounded in my ears. Victor had always been good at flipping reality, bending it just enough so people questioned their own memories, their own instincts, their own sanity. He’d done it to me for years. But seeing him do it publicly— Watching him turn me into the villain with a few polished sentences— Shocked wasn’t even the word. It was betrayal sharpened to a blade. I set my phone down on the counter, forcing my hands to stop shaking. “Malicious,” I whispered to the empty kitchen. Funny. Because if he wanted war… He was finally, officially, getting one.
