The screech hit first. A violent, ripping sound tore through the quiet afternoon, like the world itself flinched. I was still in the hallway, holding a mug that suddenly felt too fragile in my hands, when Victor’s white Tesla whipped into the driveway—too fast, too loud, too furious. Gravel spat out from under the tires, skittering toward the porch like tiny, terrified messengers. My heart dropped. He didn’t even bother parking straight. The car jerked to a stop at an angle, door flying open before the engine had fully settled. Victor stormed out, slamming the door hard enough that the windows trembled. His suit jacket was half-off his shoulder, tie crooked, eyes burning with that kind of rage that had nothing to do with traffic or work and everything to do with me. A chill snaked down my spine. He saw me through the front window—and paused. Only for a second. Just long enough for something sharp and unreadable to flash across his face before he marched toward the house. The kind of march that said a storm was coming and it knew exactly where to strike. I set the mug down before I dropped it. My hands were shaking. Not from fear. Not entirely. But from the awful, nauseating certainty that whatever happened next… this was a point of no return. The front door swung open with a crack. “Renee.” Just my name. Nothing else. But it landed like a verdict. His jaw was tense, his nostrils flaring. He looked like a man who’d lost control hours ago and was only now realizing it—and wanted someone to blame. I swallowed. “You’re back early.” He let out a breathless laugh. Bitter. Sharp. “Yeah. And imagine my surprise when I find out things are happening behind my back.” My pulse spiked. He knew. About the court. About everything. And the worst part? He looked ready to burn the entire house down before letting me walk away. I lifted my chin, even though every instinct begged me not to provoke him. “Victor… We need to talk.” His eyes darkened in a way that sent a cold wave of dread through me. “Oh, we will,” he said, stepping closer. “Trust me, Renee. We’re going to talk about everything.” A thunderstorm gathered in his voice—dangerous, unpredictable, and heading straight for me. And I had absolutely no idea how much damage it was going to leave behind.
