The jasmine hit first—soft, sweet, and just the tiniest bit suspiciously perfect, like it was hiding something beneath all that innocence. Renee nudged the last string of fairy lights into place along the railing, stepped back, and forced herself to breathe. It’s just a girl’s night. Wine, cheese, gossip. Normal. Except nothing in her life had been normal for weeks. The doorbell chimed. Sierra burst onto the terrace in a swirl of perfume and sunshine-yellow silk, all bright smiles and dramatic entrances. “Okay, babe, this place looks like a Pinterest board had a spiritual awakening. Are you trying to seduce me or impress someone else?” Renee laughed—too quickly. “It’s just us. I thought you deserved a nice night.” Sierra dropped her oversized bag on the chair. “You mean you deserve one. You’ve been weirdly tense. I can practically see the anxiety sizzling off your aura.” “Do auras sizzle?” “Honey, yours does.” They clinked glasses. Rosé. Cold. Dangerous. Sierra took a slow sip, eyes narrowing in that way she did whenever she smelled drama. “So. Are you going to tell me what’s actually going on? Or am I supposed to guess?” Renee busied herself with the cheese board. “Work’s… complicated.” “That’s not news. You’ve been dealing with corporate trash since you graduated.” Sierra leaned forward. “This is different. I can feel it.” A breeze swept across the terrace, stirring the petals she’d scattered earlier. They skittered across the table between them like tiny secrets refusing to stay still. Sierra set her glass down with a soft clink. “Renee. Baby. Talk to me.” Renee opened her mouth. Closed it. Tried again. Failed again. Because the truth wasn’t something you casually admitted over brie and cabernet. “He found something,” she whispered before she could stop herself. Sierra blinked. “Found… what?” Renee didn’t realize she was gripping her wine glass so tightly until her knuckles went white. “Tyler,” she said, voice thin. “In the audit this morning. He saw something he wasn’t supposed to. And now I don’t know if he’s going to confront me… or destroy me.” Sierra sat back, stunned silent for exactly two seconds—an eternity for her. Then: “Okay. Plot twist. Start from the beginning. And don’t you dare leave out any of the juicy parts.” The jasmine swayed again in the soft night air—sweet, serene, completely at odds with the panic clawing into Renee’s ribs. Because this was supposed to be a peaceful night with her best friend. Instead, it became the moment she realized everything was already unraveling.
