Chapter Fifteen – The Health Crisis Deepens The fluorescent lights hummed above Catherine’s hospital bed, a thin mechanical buzz that somehow made the silence heavier. She lay propped against the pillows, watching the IV drip count down like a clock measuring the distance between the life she once had and the one collapsing beneath her. When the doctor walked in, his expression was careful—too careful. “Your condition has worsened since last week,” he said, eyes fixed on the chart instead of her face. “We’re starting a more aggressive treatment today.” She swallowed. “Just tell me. How bad is it?” There was a pause, the kind that freezes the air. “We’re running additional tests,” he said. “Your levels don’t decline this fast without… external factors.” Her heart kicked. “External factors?” It tasted like fear. Or betrayal. He finally looked at her. “Catherine… this might not be accidental.” The room tilted. Suddenly the beeping machines sounded like alarms. “It wasn’t me,” she whispered. “I didn’t do anything—” “We’ll know more soon. But I need you to think about anyone who could’ve exposed you.” She didn’t answer. She didn’t have to. Caleb’s name was already clawing its way up her throat like poison. After the doctor left, she buried her face in her hands. Images flashed through her mind—Caleb brushing off her concerns, Caleb insisting she “stop overthinking,” Caleb disappearing exactly when her symptoms started. She wanted to scream. Instead she forced herself to breathe. By the time evening rolled in and the sky outside turned a washed-out blue, she’d made a decision. If someone wanted to destroy her life quietly, she refused to go down quietly. When the nurse came to check her vitals, Catherine said, “I need a lawyer.” The nurse blinked. “A lawyer?” “Yes.” Her voice was thin but steady. “And I need them fast.” Two hours later, she sat across from a sharply dressed attorney in a small conference room that smelled like disinfectant and anxiety. “My doctor believes I might have been deliberately infected,” Catherine said. “And I know exactly who could’ve done it.” The lawyer leaned forward, eyes narrowing with interest. “Miss Hale… are you prepared for what this accusation entails?” Catherine’s pulse throbbed painfully in her wrist, but she didn’t look away. “I’ve lost my health. I’ve lost my work. I’ve lost the life I was supposed to have. At this point? I’m prepared for anything.” There was a long, dangerous silence. “All right,” the lawyer said. “Then let’s start by going after him.”
