Chapter 088: The Public Duty Line The public plug went silent before anyone could argue about privilege. Not amber. Not weak. Silent. Elise's mask flattened against her mouth, and the fourth light shrank to a nailhead above the blue repair square. In the borrowed sky, the little crack inside the fog window vanished as if a thumb had rubbed it out from the other side. Aven stared at the tablet. "It only printed the prompt." Mira kept her voice low because panic would give Northstar a new field. "The room heard the prompt. Judge, do not erase anything yet." Northstar's attorney was already standing. "Author privilege is not erasure. It is preservation. The public duty line can be re-entered after protected review." Protected review appeared in the margin. The gold rail brightened over the table, and the toy-chest latch snapped twice. Keth caught the tube before it bent. Clay stepped between the battery and the rail with both palms open. "That is not preservation." Vale's pen hovered above the order. "Aven, clear protected review." Aven cleared it. The plug gave one weak tick, but no hum. Mira looked at Vale, not at Northstar. "Read the line that harmed her least." Vale read from his own margin. "Generic capture instruction, not public safety authoring." The plug ticked again. The mask fog returned in a thin cloud. The fourth light lifted from nailhead to coin. The fog window in the sky did not reopen, but the erased crack showed as a pale bruise. Mara's camera exposure steadied. Oren whispered, "The margin is holding her." Mira said, "The public duty line is holding her." The private relief observer icon flashed. "Author privilege requires removal from public margin." Removal from public margin wrote itself beneath the icon. The discharge page slid toward the gold rail. Liora's covered key hand tightened under the cloth until the knuckles showed. The old wheel made one short, ugly grind. "They want the sentence out of sight," Liora said. "Not out of sight," the donor guardian replied. His softness had returned, but it sat wrong on his face now. "Out of reach. The court can preserve it without public harm." The candle dot went black. Elise's mask thinned again. Keth said, "Out of reach harms her." Vale repeated it into the microphone. "Out of reach harms her." The microphone cracked, then cleared. The fire board liaison icon sparked red, and its label sharpened for the first time in the hearing: public line required for support continuity. Northstar's attorney pointed at the icon. "That is a conclusion from a role we cannot identify." "Then test the line without the role," Mira said. "Aven, write: line remains because breath worsens when removed." Aven typed. Line remains because breath worsens when removed. The plug hummed white for three full beats. Elise's mask filled. The fourth light warmed the repair square. Under the blanket, three marker taps answered fast enough to sound like yes before fear caught up with them. Vale's hand lowered, and he wrote the sentence into the order. Northstar's attorney moved at once. "Objection. If the line remains, the author is exposed by inference." Inference appeared. The window-square bruise darkened. Clay's shoulders shifted, but he did not touch the battery. "Inference is another hand." The attorney snapped, "It is a legal effect." Mira said, "It has a body cost. No inference field." Vale struck inference. The plug held, and that made Northstar angrier than a ruling would have. Mira could see it in the attorney's jaw and in the donor guardian's hand closing around nothing. The trustee chair icon brightened, pale and old. "Public duty line may remain under trustee custody." Trustee custody brought the corridor back, not as a route but as a white seam across the sky. The toy-chest latch gave one furious clack. The candle dot stayed black. Liora said, "Custody is the same erasure with a chair sitting on it." Mira almost smiled, then did not. "No trustee custody. The line remains in the order, visible to the room, not held by a chair." Vale wrote exactly that. The seam in the sky broke into harmless dust. Aven's tablet pulsed again. "It says fire-board privilege custody can hold the line." The fire board liaison icon sparked as if struck. The public plug flickered amber-white-amber. Clay turned his body more squarely toward the battery. "Fire custody makes fire a hand too." Vale said, "Fire board, answer by support behavior." For one breath, nothing answered. Then the liaison icon dimmed until only its red edge remained. The plug steadied white. The fourth light spread. The response printed without a name: fire-board duty supports public line, not privilege custody. Mara caught the donor guardian's face before he fixed it. Fear again. Not fear of author identity. Fear that every public role was learning how to refuse private custody language. Northstar's attorney shifted to the last soft place. "At minimum, redact the exact phrase generic capture instruction. Preserve only the outcome." Redact exact phrase appeared, and the borrowed sky went dark from the edges inward. The fog window disappeared completely. Elise coughed once behind the mask. Keth's palm flattened beside the tube. Clay's open hands rose higher. Liora's covered key knocked the table by accident, one hard sound that made everyone look down and then away. Mira said, "No redaction of the phrase." "Counsel is trying to publish accusation without author," Northstar said. "No," Mira said. "I am preserving the behavior that kept her breathing." Vale repeated, "The behavior that kept her breathing." The phrase did not restore the sky. Mira felt the room waiting for the exact words, not their softened cousin. She turned to Aven. "Read the line as written." Aven's mouth opened, closed, then obeyed. "Generic capture instruction, not public safety authoring." The public plug came back with a clean white hum. Elise's mask filled so fully the cloud touched both sides. The fourth light widened until it covered the repair square. In the borrowed sky, the fog window returned, and the small crack inside it grew into a crooked line like a child had drawn not a door, but a way for sound to pass through glass. Under the blanket, the marker tapped four times. Vale wrote, "Exact phrase remains. Public duty line remains. No author identity, no source document, no route, no receiving unit, no custody." The tablet accepted each word until custody. At custody, the gold rail flashed and then collapsed into a dull line. It printed one more prompt: public confrontation required if private relief disputes line. The donor guardian said, "Then we dispute it." The borrowed sky went dark, but the fog window stayed white.
