📖 Verdict Beneath the Borrowed Sky
Public Duty Cannot Move Her
Chapter 086: Public Duty Cannot Move Her
The corridor in the borrowed sky looked too clean to be trusted. One white line ran down its center. No room numbers, no ward labels, no faces in the painted light. At the far end, breath fogged against something the projector refused to name. Aven's tablet waited below it: liaison record demands body transfer condition. Elise's mask filled, emptied, filled again. Keth held the tube slack with two fingers, the way she had held a fragile truth all night. Clay stayed beside the battery with both hands open. The public plug hummed white. Under the blanket, the toy-chest latch did not move.
Vale said, "Private relief observer, explain why breath requires transfer."
The gold icon answered before Northstar's attorney could rise. "A protected body cannot remain under public disorder. Private relief can move the support subject to controlled continuity."
Support subject appeared on Aven's screen. The public plug browned. Elise's mask fog thinned to a crescent. The fourth light shrank until it barely touched the blue repair square. Keth's fingers lifted the tube at once, not moving Elise, only refusing the bend. Mira said, "Delete support subject."
Aven did. The plug returned white, but the corridor stayed bright. Northstar's attorney stood. "If the court refuses subject language, it still needs a movement protocol. This is medical safety."
"Ask the room," Mira said.
Vale leaned toward the microphone. "Does support improve if the body remains here under public continuity?"
The fire board liaison icon crackled red. "Public continuity is stable where visible." The generator hum climbed. Elise's mask fog thickened. A marker tapped once under the blanket, cautious but alive.
Northstar's attorney lifted his hand. "Visible where? The liaison record cannot operate without a route."
Route field opened itself. The corridor in the sky sharpened; its white line bent into an arrow. The old wheel under the bench made a grinding turn. The candle dot went black. Clay spoke before Mira had to ask. "That arrow is a hand." The microphone caught him. The arrow blurred back into a line.
Mira pointed at the sky. "No route."
"Then receiving authority," the donor guardian said. His voice softened around authority like a blanket laid over a lock. "Not custody. A receiving authority can hold continuity until public disorder clears."
Receiving authority appeared. The gold rail brightened. The public plug flickered between white and amber so quickly Mara's camera exposure pulsed. Oren steadied her elbow. In the frame, Clay's empty hands looked steady while the screen behind him lied. Keth said, "Her breath is worse on receiving authority."
Vale repeated it. "The record will say receiving authority worsens breath."
"It worsens because there is no actual receiver," Northstar's attorney said. "Name the receiving unit."
At unit, the fourth light went hard and small. Elise coughed once behind the mask. Liora's covered key hand lifted half an inch, and the cloth trembled as if a child below had breathed against it. "No unit," Liora said.
The trustee chair icon returned, pale and irritated. "Public duty cannot provide indefinite in-place care."
Mira turned toward it. "No one asked for indefinite. The order holds while private actors are making support worse."
"Temporary public hold, then," Aven said, reading what the tablet offered before he could stop himself. Temporary hold. The toy-chest latch clicked hard enough that everyone heard the word become a hand. The public plug went amber. Clay stepped one inch closer to the battery, not touching it, only denying the private line an angle. Mira said, "Not hold."
Aven swallowed and erased it. Vale took off his glasses. "What verb can I use?"
"Keep," Mira said. "Keep plug public. Keep battery in frame. Keep tube protected. Keep camera wide. Keep private reach out. Keep the body where breath improves."
Northstar's attorney gave a short laugh. "Counsel nearly said child."
Elise's mask flattened before the word even fully left his mouth. Mira felt the trap bite because the room remembered what she had almost made possible. She did not flinch. "Then the record will say why the correction matters. Body where breath improves, not child as subject, not route, not receiving authority."
Aven typed the correction. The mask fog returned. The fourth light softened back across the repair square. Under the blanket, a marker tapped twice, as if approving the repair and warning her not to touch the field again.
The private relief observer icon brightened. "A body cannot be kept without custodian."
Custodian did not even make it fully onto Aven's screen before the candle dot snapped black. The old wheel shrieked. The corridor in the sky opened at the far end, and the fog there vanished. Keth moved then. She put her palm flat on the table beside Elise's mask, not touching Elise, not touching the tube, making her hand a boundary the court could see. "No custodian," she said. "Care does not require a custodian to avoid harming her."
Vale repeated, "Care does not require a custodian to avoid harm."
The public plug popped white. The corridor's far-end fog returned. The donor guardian's face changed. It was quick, but Mara caught it: not fear for Elise, fear that the room had learned a verb he did not own.
"Public disorder remains," he said. "There is danger in leaving the body exposed."
Mira looked at the camera frame, the plug, the battery, the evidence sleeve, the discharge page, the toy chest seam, Keth's hand, Clay's open palms, Liora's covered key. "The danger is private reach."
Vale said it into the microphone. "The danger is private reach."
For the first time, the corridor in the sky dimmed from its far end, as if someone there had heard the sentence and stepped back. Northstar's attorney tried one last angle. "Then move private reach. Assign fire escort to clear the path."
Fire escort appeared red. The fire board liaison icon sparked. "Fire escort without route is body command."
The liaison had answered against itself. Silence followed, full and useful. Mira let the silence stretch until everyone heard Elise breathe inside it. "Public duty cannot move her. Public duty can keep the private hand from turning breath into a transfer."
Vale signed that line. Aven's tablet did not protest. It waited, then printed beneath the order: liaison record author required to answer body-transfer insertion. The gold rail in the sky shook. Behind it, the narrow corridor lost its white line. At the far end, the fog remained, but now it formed a small square, like a window drawn by a child who had been told not to draw doors.
Liora's covered key touched the table once. Clay whispered, "Someone wrote the transfer before they knew where she was."
