Chapter 028: Clay Finds the Maintenance Tongue The notch, hook, and bent line had already begun to thin by the time Mira lowered herself to the floor. The borrowed sky above Elise was white and blank, scrubbed clean by Northstar's reset, but the ankle-height seam kept its small blue pulse under the taped fifth label. It looked weaker than a candle. It made every adult in Cedar Ward lean toward it anyway. "No one asks who is behind that panel," Mira said. Vale's officer twisted Clay's cuffed wrists higher. "Then no one asks him anything." Clay did not fight the grip. His face stayed turned toward the marks, not the officer. "Ask route behavior," he said, each word careful enough to bruise him. "Not location. Not access. Not command." The seam blinked once. The notch returned first, a short vertical bite of blue. The hook followed, curved like a finger pulling down. The bent line came last and nearly failed before it reached the floor tile. Mira kept the wet receipt and the child's strip pressed against Elise's clear oxygen shield with one hand. With the other she pointed to the floor, not the seam. "Clay Rourke, read-only. What is this route saying when it uses those three marks?" Judge Vale's chair scraped back. "That question is an invitation to operate concealed fire infrastructure." "No," Mira said. "It is a question about displayed behavior in a room where a patient's oxygen pressure just dipped. Dr. Keth?" Keth had two fingers on Elise's mask line and her eyes on the amber lights. "First amber-blue pulse stable. Second stable. Third shallow flutter. Fourth unchanged." She swallowed. "Fifth dip." Elise's lashes trembled. Five thin taps answered on the rail, so faint Mira felt them more through the bed frame than heard them. Ari made a broken sound and pressed both hands over her mouth before a name could escape. Behind the shutter, Nima knocked once, then twice, then dragged a nail down metal. Wait. Stop. Wait. Mira nodded without looking away from Clay. "The route is speaking during fifth-load pressure." When Vale snapped, "Objection to the interpreter testifying," Mira answered, "Then listen to the doctor." Keth's voice sharpened. "The seam light and mask pressure are synchronized enough to require preservation. Removing the reader or isolating the seam risks destroying medical evidence." Northstar's representative smiled with empty patience. "Doctor, a floor seam is not medical equipment." Keth did not look at him. "It is attached to the same event that made my patient lose pressure." Mara crouched until the camera caught the receipt, the strip, Elise's mask, Clay's restrained hands, and the three failing marks in one ugly diagonal. Oren braced her shoulder with his good hand. Sweat ran gray along his jaw, but he kept his finger below the lens, pointing whenever the officer's boot drifted toward the seam. "Camera back," the officer ordered. "Court camera," Mara said. "Family chain. Medical event." The donor guardian stepped close enough for his polished shoe to cut the blue light in half. "Maintenance language proves exactly what we have said. The ward has controlled routes for minors. Private guardianship keeps them from unsafe family interference." Ari's hands fell from her mouth. "You sold their light." Mira warned her name once, and Ari caught herself, shaking. "I said light. Not a name." Under the grate, Liora coughed, then tapped the metal with something hard. One tap. Two. A pause. Then the same hooked rhythm, clumsier but unmistakable. Northstar's smile vanished. "Remove whoever is in the lower service space." "No one moves below," Mira said. "Liora, only marks. No names." Liora's voice rasped up through the grate. "That hook is old route speech. Not ward speech. June taught us to read it when the lights went bad." "Unreliable family folklore," Vale said. Clay closed his eyes for one second. When he opened them, he looked older than he had at the fire board. "It matches municipal maintenance shorthand. Not the current panel language. Older. Hand-inspected systems used it when a route could not be opened without exposing what it carried." "What does it say?" Mira asked. The officer jerked Clay's arms. Clay inhaled through his teeth and did not let the sound become a command. "Notch means load detected. Hook means hold or draw. Bent line means reroute under obstruction." Northstar's representative cut in. "There. He is directing movement." Mira held the line on displayed status, asking only whether the marks told anyone to open a door, identify a child, or show a route carrying a load while obstructed. Clay answered no, no, and yes. The seam pulsed brighter on the word yes. Elise's mask dipped again on the fifth beat, and Keth swore under her breath. Ari reached for Nima's shutter. She stopped with her fingers an inch from the metal and looked at Mira for permission like a child asking whether comfort was evidence destruction. "One knock," Mira said. "Only one." Ari tapped once. Nima answered once. The seam flashed the notch, then the hook, then the bent line, faster now, as if it had been waiting for a rhythm it trusted. Liora answered from below with the same three beats. For a breath, the room became a ladder made of sound: bed rail, shutter, grate, floor seam, mask. Vale stepped down from the bench platform. "This court will not let an interpreter conduct a hidden-child relay under the language of evidence." Mira rose only to her knees. "Then order Northstar to keep the seam visible, keep Clay in read-only restraint, keep Keth's medical count on record, and keep your officers' boots off the marks. That protects the child better than pretending the route is silent." "You do not define protection." "No. The fifth-load dip does." The donor guardian bent and pinched the taped label between two fingers. "If this is a load route, the ward can reassign it to a certified relief account. A minor does not need family panic to keep breathing." Liora made a low animal sound below the grate. Ari lunged, but Mara caught her sleeve before the officers could. The guardian pulled. The tape lifted a quarter inch, and the seam went dark under his hand. Elise stopped tapping. Keth moved first. She shoved the guardian's wrist away with the side of her forearm, not hard enough to strike, hard enough to save a breath. "Do not touch a linked pressure event." When the guardian snapped, "Assault," Keth said, "Medical preservation." The seam blinked back, frantic and small. Notch. Hook. Bent line. Then five amber-blue pulses so rapid Mira could barely count them. Clay leaned forward against the officer's hold. "Mira." She answered before Vale could: "Route terms only." Clay's voice stayed low. "It is not saying open. It is saying load-held-under-block. Reroute requested because the carried account is being reassigned." Northstar's representative's phone lit in his hand. He turned it face down too late. Mara's camera caught the screen glow, the incoming banner, and the two words before his thumb killed them: RELIEF SLOT. Mira felt the chapter of the case shift beneath her knees. Not rescue. Not yet. Auction. "Say it without command," she told Clay, and his eyes stayed on the seam. "Someone is trying to move the fifth load into private relief. The route is warning before it changes hands." Nima struck the shutter three times, hard enough to rattle the frame. Ari answered with one palm against the metal, and this time Mira did not stop her. Elise's eyes opened, wet and furious above the mask. Vale looked at Northstar. For the first time, she did not ask Mira a question. "What private relief?" Northstar's representative slid his phone into his pocket. "Emergency resource allocation." The seam went black. The borrowed sky stayed white. Only the receipt against Elise's shield still said active account. Then the donor wall behind bed twelve woke with a soft, expensive chime, and a new slot opened beside Seven, Cracked Star, Ladder, and Crescent. It did not show a name. It showed a price field, a pulsing fifth amber icon, and the waiting label: PRIVATE RELIEF AUCTION.
