📖 Verdict Beneath the Borrowed Sky
The Roster Deletes Elise
Chapter 021: The Roster Deletes Elise
Mara swung the lens so hard the strap snapped against Oren's wrist. He hissed and still caught the camera with his good hand before it dipped. Across the corridor, the donor wall had brightened into a long sheet of names and ward marks, all of them washed in the borrowed sky's pale blue. Seven's row pulsed once. Elise Sol's name showed beside it for less than a breath, then the letters thinned as if someone were wiping them from behind the glass.
"Stay on it," Mira said.
"I am," Mara answered, but her voice broke on the second word.
Ari tightened around Mira's neck. Nima's trapped wrist slid another fraction under the shutter, blood darkening the dust on the sill. Below the grate, Liora shoved the E-SOL strip and the duplicate Seven tag upward until both touched the blue paint. The brass key still hung from the open fire cabinet, bright and simple, as if a city safety worker might walk in any second and do the ordinary thing.
Dr. Keth counted under her breath. "In. Out. In. Elise, tap me if you hear your name."
Elise tapped once against the rail.
On the donor wall, Seven's row dimmed again.
"She hears it," Keth said louder. "Patient responds to Elise Sol and Seven by established tap pattern."
"Objection to interpretation," Vale said from the speaker.
Mira did not look at the speaker. "Then ask her."
The corridor held its breath. Vale's silence landed harder than a ruling.
Northstar's representative stepped toward the cabinet. "Roster reconciliation has begun because unauthorized activation pressure contaminated a protected child route. If that key turns now, the system will lock the corrected roster."
Clay stood with both hands visible at his sides. "That is not a child route correction. That is identity deletion tied to safety activation."
"You do not have operational authority."
"I am reading behavior," Clay said. "The roster is responding to the key being produced, not to a medical update."
An officer moved for the brass key. Mira shifted Ari to her left arm and put her right hand on the cabinet door before he could close it. The metal was cold under her palm. Ari made a small frightened sound against her shoulder, but Mira did not step back.
"Record this," Mira said. "The fire-drill key is present. The route remains blocked. Elise Sol is alive enough to breathe, tap, and be billed, and Northstar's roster is deleting her while an officer reaches for the public key."
"You are creating prejudice," Vale said.
"No," Oren said, teeth clenched around pain. "The wall is doing that."
Mara zoomed until the row filled the camera. The name did not vanish cleanly. First the family name faded, then the ward identity brightened as Seven, then a new gray bracket opened around the row. The donor guardian moved so fast Liora shouted from below.
"Keep him off the grate!"
The guardian lunged toward Liora's hands instead of the camera. Mira caught his sleeve with the hand that had been holding the cabinet. Ari slipped; Mira locked her elbow around the child and yanked the guardian sideways before his fingers reached the strip.
"That is authenticated family proof," Mira said.
"That is ward property." He twisted, face flushed and damp. "The tag belongs with the child file."
"Then say which child." Mira dragged him one step into Mara's frame. "Elise Sol, Seven, or the corrected blank?"
The donor wall answered before he did. The bracket around Seven's row filled with a new phrase in small gray letters: temporary ward-held minor, name review pending.
Ari read the first word and started shaking. "They can do that?"
Nima's mouth pressed against the glass. "No," she said, too soft for anyone except Mira to hear.
Mira bent Ari close to the panel. "Say her name."
"Elise," Ari whispered.
"Louder."
"Elise Sol," Ari said, and her voice climbed out of fear into anger. "Seven is Elise Sol."
Nima struck the glass once with her free hand. Elise answered from the bed rail with four taps, weak but timed. Liora lifted the strip and tag until blue paint smeared across the printed E-SOL line. "June Sol's mark, Ari Hall's tag, Elise's tap," she shouted from below. "That is family contact, not a blank."
Keth's hand trembled on Elise's oxygen line. The borrowed sky above bed twelve flickered, and Elise's lips went pale around the mask. Keth leaned over her, refusing to lose the rail taps to panic. "Elise, once for Mira. Once for Ari. Once for Liora."
Tap. Tap. Tap.
"Medical record," Keth said. "Three distinct responses to named family contacts during roster alteration."
Vale's speaker snapped, "Doctor, stop coaching a patient under respiratory compromise."
Keth's eyes did not leave Elise. "I am keeping a patient conscious while your roster removes the name she is answering to."
Northstar's representative reached past the officer for the key cord. Clay stepped between them without touching the key. "If you take that key, you confirm the safety route and the roster are linked."
"Move."
"No." Clay's voice dropped, not loud, not heroic, just final. "I am not turning it. I am not commanding it. I am standing where the camera can see the difference between public safety evidence and private custody cleanup."
Mara shifted the frame to hold Clay's empty hands, the brass key, the dimming row, and Mira's grip on the donor guardian's sleeve. Oren steadied her elbow. Blood from his earlier injury marked the camera strap like a seal.
The donor wall chimed. Seven's row detached from Elise's fading name and slid toward a separate column marked by a donor crest. A transfer slot opened beneath it.
"There," the donor guardian said, grabbing for triumph because shame had failed him. "The system has placed her correctly."
Mira let go of his sleeve and moved faster than his next breath. She planted Ari in Mara's side, took two steps to Elise's bed, and put her hand over Elise's tapping fingers. The taps struck Mira's palm, alive and furious.
"Elise Sol is not correctly placed because a donor crest wants a clean row," Mira said. "She is here. She is breathing through Dr. Keth's hand. She is answering family. She is linked to the fire route your wall is trying to make useless."
Elise tapped again, twice. Ari cried out, "She wants the key."
Clay glanced once at Mira. Not command. Request. Mira saw the question and the trap in the same instant. If he turned it, Vale would own him. If Mira turned it, Vale would call it family abduction. If no one turned it, the roster would finish making Elise a blank.
Liora solved it from below. "The public key belongs to the public route. Put it on camera and ask the wall who gets the receipt for her breath."
Mira's head lifted. "Clay, read only. If the key is turned under public drill condition, what record should open?"
Clay leaned toward the cabinet, hands still clear. "A drill activation log. Time, route, responsible relay, and safety accounting."
"Safety accounting," Mira repeated. "Northstar, if Elise has no name, why did her breath have a payer?"
The donor wall froze. Not dimmed, not brightened. Froze, as if the question had reached a part of it no privacy order had prepared.
From bed twelve, the printer under the oxygen monitor clicked once.
Vale said, "Do not touch that receipt."
Mira smiled without softness. "Then it is Elise's."
The paper slid out inch by inch, blue light crawling across the header. Mara swung the lens from the donor wall to the printer just as Seven's row tried one last time to go gray. The receipt caught the borrowed sky and printed a name in dark, wet letters.
Elise Sol. Auxiliary breath, active account.
