📖 Verdict Beneath the Borrowed Sky
Static Above Bed Twelve
Chapter 009: Static Above Bed Twelve
FIND THE VOICE FEED broke into white dust above bed twelve.
The letters scattered across the borrowed sky, reformed, and vanished behind a strip of false stars. Elise's oxygen line stayed blue-white-blue. The monitor did not alarm, but Dr. Keth still shoved her shoulder into the half-locked door until the frame shook. "Nobody touches that projector until I separate it from oxygen."
"The message is a symptom," Judge Vale said through the wall. "Patient distress, grief hallucination, or unauthorized family interference. Ward access, mute the visual display."
The donor guardian lifted both hands as if he were calming a frightened room. "For the child's privacy, Judge, I support immediate projector shutdown and private transfer of any recording to a licensed child-protection custodian."
"That is you," Mira said.
"That is safety."
"That is a lock with a nicer word."
The dinosaur boy kept the tablet aimed at the ceiling. His wrist trembled. His mother whispered, "Breathe with me," but she did not lower his arms. Aunt Liora was still visible through the manual lens, half pulled away from the grate, one bloody hand clamped around the roster's corner. The cracked-star row glowed and dimmed, glowed and dimmed, matching the static above Elise.
Mira stepped back from the brass lens only far enough to face both pieces of evidence. "Record: bed twelve ceiling wrote `FIND THE VOICE FEED` after Aunt Liora's roster showed sky-room symbols. Oxygen line remains stable. Static rhythm matches the roster's cracked-star row."
"Speculation," Vale said.
"Then give us the feed log."
The access officer touched the ceiling isolation switch. Clay moved before Mira asked, then stopped himself with one hand flat against his own chest. The motion cost him; shame passed over his face like smoke.
Mira saw it and made the request clean. "Clay, read-only inspection. Can you tell whether projector mute touches oxygen routing?"
He exhaled once. "I can read that without command."
"Do that. Nothing else."
Clay crouched under the access panel, keeping his fingers away from the red field. "Read-only inspection requested by Mira Sol. Family camera has my hands." The tablet tilted down just enough to catch him. The panel objected with a buzz, then opened a gray diagnostic strip: CEILING COMFORT PROJECTOR / AUX BREATH FEED SHARE: LEGACY COUPLED. MUTE MAY INTERRUPT PATIENT LINE. COMMAND REQUIRED TO SEPARATE.
Dr. Keth swore. "Do not mute it."
The donor guardian's smile finally slipped. "Doctor, if a comfort projector is coupled to oxygen, private emergency maintenance is even more urgent."
"No," Keth said. "It means someone built comfort words into breath."
The borrowed sky crackled. A voice came through so thin Mira first thought it was Elise trying to speak through the tube. "Star room hears... roster..."
Elise's fingers tightened on the blue blanket. Keth turned to her, not the ceiling. "Elise, can you breathe?"
Elise gave two taps against the rail. Yes. Then one tap. Wait.
Mira moved to the bed glass. "Elise, I will not translate the ceiling as your words unless you tell me it is yours." She said it for Elise, for Vale, for the camera. "Two taps if the voice is you."
Elise did not tap twice. She lifted one trembling finger and pointed upward.
The dinosaur boy whispered, "Not her."
The ceiling hissed again. "Cracked star... not Seven... don't let donor wall move..."
The donor guardian stepped backward so fast his heel struck the access officer's boot. Vale's speaker popped, then recovered. "This is inadmissible audio contamination."
"It is a child warning us about your wall," Mira said.
"You cannot know the speaker is a child."
Mira looked through the manual lens. Liora had seen the ceiling light change reflected in the brass rim. She slammed the roster against the grate with the strength she had left and jabbed at the cracked-star row. The same row was pulsing in time with the voice. Not Elise's blue blanket square. Cracked star.
"Visible roster correlation," Mira said. "Cracked-star row pulses with the voice that says `not Seven.`"
Clay's diagnostic strip refreshed. SOURCE CHANNEL: COMFORT FEED B / LOWER RETURN RELAY. LAST HUMAN INPUT: CEDAR SKY ROOM 3. STATUS: LOCKED BY DONOR WALL.
"There," he said. His voice was almost too low. "I can read it, but tracing past that asks for command."
"Stop at read," Mira said.
He pulled both hands back and sat on his heels, pale and obedient to the boundary. "Stopped."
The clerk cut in, breathless. "Judge, the family camera is collecting minors' identities. We need protective seizure."
The receipt mother laughed once, sharp enough to make the access officer flinch. "You call it protective every time someone else sees what you did."
Vale ignored her. "Ward access, remove the civilian camera. If Dr. Keth refuses projector mute, isolate the family recording."
The officer reached for the boy.
Elise tapped once against the rail. The ceiling answered before Mira could: "Boy camera stays."
The boy nearly dropped the tablet. His mother wrapped both hands around his wrists. "It heard you," she whispered.
Mira felt fear rise, because awe was dangerous in a court built to steal meaning. She pinned it down with language. "Do not treat the ceiling as magic. Treat it as a feed. It knows the camera because this room is listening."
Dr. Keth's voice came through the glass, tight and controlled. "Bed twelve microphone array is supposed to be disabled."
"Supposed to be," Mira said, "is not a setting."
The donor guardian recovered his polish. "If the room is listening, every second of public recording violates child privacy. My foundation can move the children behind protected walls."
Above bed twelve, the false stars blinked off. In their place a new line wrote itself, crooked and urgent: DONOR WALL MOVING.
The access panel beside Clay changed from gray to red. A private custody display unfolded across it with slots for children Mira had not yet seen: SEVEN, CRACKED STAR, LADDER, CRESCENT. Each slot had one button glowing beneath it.
ACCEPT EMERGENCY SHELTER TRANSFER.
Clay did not touch the panel. Dr. Keth did not step away from Elise. The dinosaur boy kept recording, crying silently now, tablet fixed on the red donor wall.
Mira put herself between the button and the room. "Chapter note," she said, because records had saved them once and might still fail them. "The voice feed is not Elise. It identifies cracked-star child from Cedar Sky Room 3, warns that the donor wall is moving, and the wall has now opened private transfer slots for Seven and other roster symbols. No one signs."
