📖 Verdict Beneath the Borrowed Sky
A Judge Without Windows
Chapter 007: A Judge Without Windows
Vale's speakers stayed dead for three seconds too long.
In that silence the ward became honest. The borrowed sky drifted over Elise's bed, but the real corridor below it was counting down in red: LOWER CORRIDOR SEAL: 74. The access officer had one hand on his radio and the other on the latch release. Clay stood with Ash Board B in his palm. The donor guardian watched the red command box as if it were a door he could push open with Clay's shame.
Mira faced the family camera first. "Record that the court audio cut out after lower-corridor witness identified `L. Sol family contact` and said the court has no windows down there." The dinosaur boy nodded until his tablet shook. His mother braced his elbows. The receipt mother blocked the access officer's clearest path to the camera. "Still recording," the boy said.
Vale returned through the wall with a hiss that made the ceiling speakers tremble. "This court does not certify unidentified maintenance audio." "No one asked you to certify it," Mira said. "We are preserving it until a human witness can be seen." "The lower corridor is outside court view." "That is the problem."
The clerk broke in fast. "Strike argumentative response. Ward access, seal the lower route. Medical emergency remains in Cedar Ward." Dr. Keth slapped a gloved hand against the glass before the officer could move. "Medical hold remains on bed twelve routing. If that lower seal changes oxygen power or sensor feed, I want your name on the chart." The officer's hand stopped above the latch. "Doctor, I have a court order." "You have a speaker," Keth said. "I have a breathing child."
Elise's oxygen line flickered blue-white-blue. Her fingers closed on the rail under the blanket, two taps, then a third that looked more like effort than signal. "Elise sees us," Mira said, then raised her voice. "Clay, read route status only. Do not accept command. Do not open a door unless Dr. Keth confirms it will not change bed twelve routing."
Clay nodded once. "Read only." The donor guardian stepped between him and the panel. "A child is trapped behind a grate. If Mr. Rourke refuses command, he is refusing rescue. My foundation will accept emergency custody now." He held out his phone, already glowing with a signature field.
Mira reached past the phone and pointed to the red panel. "That is not a rescue request. It is a custody grab with a trapped witness as leverage." The guardian's smile thinned. "Your sister needs oxygen." "And you keep putting oxygen behind signatures."
Clay slid the Ash Board card along the reader's lower edge, touching only the information tab. The wall resisted with a hard buzz. ACCEPT INCIDENT COMMAND TO VIEW SEALED ROUTE. Clay's thumb jerked. Mira did not grab him this time. She put herself beside him, close enough that he could see her open hand. "What do you need?" she asked. "A way to prove I am not opening it." The boy's mother lifted the tablet higher. "My son has the screen and your hand."
Clay looked at her as if she had handed him a railing in smoke. "Thank you." He held his fingers flat and away from the red command box. "Read-only attempt, witnessed by family camera." The access panel clicked, then split its display: ASH BOARD B ROUTE: LOWER LAUNDRY FIRE CUT. COMMAND FIELD: UNTOUCHED. SEAL VIEW: MANUAL LENS AVAILABLE.
"Manual lens?" Mira asked. The access officer shifted. "Old fire code. No power feed, no court camera. A sight tube." Vale's voice sharpened. "Ward access, do not expose sealed infrastructure to civilians." "Then you should not have hidden a family contact there," Mira said. "Open the sight tube."
The officer looked from Vale's speaker to Dr. Keth's glass to the family camera. His throat worked. "Manual lens does not open the route. It is visual only." Keth checked Elise's monitor, then nodded once. "Visual only does not touch my routing. Do it."
He pulled a brass cover from the wall. Dust dropped onto his sleeve. Behind it was a narrow black eyepiece, absurdly old against the glowing borrowed sky. Mira bent, but the donor guardian caught her elbow. "You are not authorized to inspect court-adjacent infrastructure."
Clay moved without touching the man. He set the burned card against his chest. "Take your hand off her before I ask the camera to record your foundation obstructing a medical witness." The guardian let go. Vale said, "Mr. Rourke, you have no standing." Clay answered the wall, "I know. That is why she asked me only to read."
Mira put her eye to the lens. The lower corridor was a slit of yellow light beneath the ward. Pipes crowded the ceiling, laundry carts sat behind a half-dropped fire curtain, and at the far grate a woman pressed one palm through the mesh. Her hair was bound in a gray scarf. Blood ran from her wrist to her elbow. She held something white against the grate, too close for Mira to read. "Aunt Liora," Mira said before caution could reach her.
The woman's face lifted. She could not hear through the lens, but she saw movement. Her mouth shaped Mira's childhood name, not the court name. Miri. Mira closed one hand around the brass rim. Behind her, Vale said, "Unverified visual impression. The court cannot accept lip-reading through a maintenance lens."
"I did not offer lip-reading," Mira said. "I am identifying my aunt on camera." "Family bias noted." "Good. Note that I have family to be biased about."
The receipt mother made a sound between laugh and sob. The dinosaur boy whispered, "The paper. She is showing paper." Mira looked again. Liora flattened the white card against the grate. The old lens warped the words, but the top line showed when the corridor light flashed: CEDAR FOSTER NIGHT ROSTER. Under it, several names had been blacked out. One line stayed clear. ELISE SOL - BLUE BLANKET - SKY ROOM HOLD.
Dr. Keth swore under her breath. "Sky room is not a medical ward term." The clerk snapped, "Strike the doctor's characterization." "No," Keth said. "Put it in the chart."
The lower seal clock fell to 28. The access officer stepped toward the brass lens. "If the seal drops, the grate locks for fire isolation." "Then hold it," Mira said. "I cannot without command authority." The donor guardian raised his phone again. "My foundation can."
Clay's face went pale in a way that made Mira remember smoke without seeing it. "Board B wants a signer to hold the seal," he said. "If I sign, they own the mistake through me."
"Can you block the latch physically?" Mira asked. The officer blinked. "Against a fire curtain?"
Clay was already moving. "Not the curtain. The manual lens cover. If the cover stays open, the old system keeps inspection mode active for sixty seconds." He grabbed the brass cover, wedged it against the hinge, and planted his shoulder beneath it. The panel blared. INSPECTION MODE OBSTRUCTION. COMMAND RECOMMENDED.
"Recommended is not required," Mira said for the camera. Clay grunted. "Sixty seconds."
Mira bent to the lens. Liora had turned the roster sideways. Another unmarked line showed below Elise's: SEVEN / TEMP FOSTER RETURN / NO FAMILY WINDOW. Then the corridor light pulsed and the blacked-out names shone through the marker, not readable, but alive with a faint green underglow from the paper's embedded strip.
"It glows," the dinosaur boy said. "The foster roster glows." Vale's speaker roared back at full volume. "Remove the civilian camera." The receipt mother stepped in front of the boy. "You first."
Mira kept her eye on the lower corridor. Liora pressed two fingers to the roster, then pointed not at Elise's name but at the glowing blacked-out column above it. The hidden names brightened one by one as the seal clock froze at 03 under Clay's shoulder. Mira understood the hook before she had proof. Elise was not the only child under the borrowed sky. The roster had been made to disappear until someone below the court held it up to the one place Vale could not see.
"Chapter note," Mira said, not looking away. "Visible witness identified as Aunt Liora Sol at lower laundry grate. She holds Cedar foster night roster showing Elise Sol, blue blanket, sky room hold, and glowing redacted child entries. Clay Rourke is maintaining inspection mode without command acceptance. Dr. Keth's medical hold remains active. Judge Vale's court has audio, but no window."
