📖 On the wedding night, the stepson crossed the line
8 One Week Later
The charity auction at the Metropolitan Museum of Art was already glittering with New York’s finest when Isabella de Villeneuve Lawrence stepped into the hall and instantly became one of the night’s brightest focal points.
Her midnight-blue gown hugged her frame with effortless elegance, and the sapphire necklace—borrowed from the Lawrence family vault—rested at her collarbones like it had always belonged there. She shone, luminous but never ostentatious. With her hand resting lightly on Alex’s arm, she played the role of the newly minted Mrs. Lawrence with flawless grace—warm, poised, supportive.
Alex, in his perfectly tailored tux, matched her pace with quiet ease. He leaned in as they walked, his voice a low murmur beneath the sweeping strings of the orchestra.
“See the bald man talking to Hunter Industries’ CFO?” Alex said, barely above a whisper. “David Cole. Board member. Oversees Asia-Pacific. One of his offshore accounts has some… suspicious activity.”
Bella’s gaze drifted over Cole with polite disinterest before settling on his heavily adorned wife. She smiled softly.
“Mrs. Cole is wearing ‘Nocturne Révélation,’” Bella murmured. “A very rare and very expensive fragrance. It’s made in a tiny Florentine atelier. My mother loved it. That means Mrs. Cole recently returned from Italy—and she has impeccable taste.”
Alex blinked, then realized what she was doing. Her seemingly trivial observations weren’t trivial at all—they painted a fuller, more telling picture. Sometimes, those stray details were exactly what filled in the missing pieces.
The chance came quickly. When a cluster of business partners pulled Alex aside, Bella found herself “coincidentally” near the champagne tower—right where Mrs. Cole happened to be standing alone.
“Mrs. Cole, your earrings are stunning,” Bella said in smooth, elegant French, her smile warm but refined. “Van Cleef & Arpels? From their private commission line? I saw something similar in Paris last winter.”
Delighted—and flattered—Mrs. Cole turned instantly. Hearing perfect French and receiving such precise praise made her preen like a pampered cat.
“Oh, Mrs. Lawrence! What an eye you have! Yes, these were—”
In moments, the two were chatting like old friends, moving breezily from jewelry to perfumes to recent European travels. Bella guided the conversation with feather-light touches, dropping hints of her “surface-level knowledge” about certain Swiss private banks and cross-border financial quirks.
It worked.
“…oh, speaking of that,” Mrs. Cole said, lowering her voice conspiratorially. “David was complaining the other week—something about how troublesome it is to handle certain ‘overseas matters,’ especially when working through those lesser-known Swiss banks. Terrible paperwork. Not like the big ones we usually use.”
A quiet spark lit in Bella’s mind—but her smile stayed soft, serene.
“Of course. Choosing trustworthy partners is everything.”
Later, she “accidentally” crossed paths with another executive’s wife. With the same graceful, subtle approach—art, taste, and perfectly timed curiosity—she learned that her husband had been playing golf rather frequently with “an old friend from the Midwest.”
Blake Hunter’s hometown: Chicago.
Halfway through the night, Bella and Alex met again briefly on the dance floor, their hands finding each other naturally as they stepped into the slow rhythm.
“Cole may be moving funds through a small Swiss bank with a questionable reputation,” she whispered, barely moving her lips. “And keep an eye on Anderson—your CFO’s assistant. His wife mentioned he’s been in contact with ‘a friend from Chicago.’”
Alex’s hand tightened just slightly at her waist, his eyes flickering with something between awe and disbelief. He hadn’t expected results this quickly—or this cleanly.
“You’re incredible, Isabella,” he murmured against her ear, his breath warm against her skin.
Her heart stumbled for just a moment—but her smile remained that perfect, composed ballroom smile.
“This is what allies do, Alex.”
