📖 On the wedding night, the stepson crossed the line
17 Crowned for Love
The twenty-four-hour deadline hung over them like a blade suspended by a single thread. Inside the Lawrence Group boardroom, the air was so heavy it felt like it might collapse under its own weight. Every seat around the long table was filled; every expression guarded, tense, bracing. They all sensed it—today, something irreversible was coming.
Blake Hunter lounged in the observer’s row, a faint, triumphant smile tugging at his mouth. His gaze drifted from the empty head seat to the chair reserved for the Lawrence family’s new matriarch—a seat that hadn’t yet been occupied.
The doors opened.
Alex Pierce stepped inside.
His dark suit cut a clean, sharp line against the steel-colored room, every stride measured, steady. Those cold blue eyes swept across the board, controlled and unreadable. No fear. No hesitation. Not even the slightest glance at Blake.
And behind him walked Isabella.
She wore a charcoal suit with crisp, precise tailoring, her pearl brooch pinned just above her collarbone. Her hair was swept up, not a strand out of place. She took her seat with a queen’s composure—back straight, chin lifted, as if walking willingly into a trial she had already prepared to win.
Alex didn’t waste a second. He moved to the head of the table and switched on the projector.
“Ladies and gentlemen,” his voice rang out through the speakers, firm and unshakable, “in the past twenty-four hours, we received a ‘final offer’ from Hunter Industries. They demanded that we withdraw from the acquisition. If we refuse, they intend to release certain unverified images of my personal life in an attempt to coerce the Lawrence Group into abandoning its strategic interests.”
A ripple of shock spread across the room. Heads turned. Eyes widened. Whispers rose and fell like waves, glancing between Alex and Isabella. Blake stiffened, surprise flickering across his face. He hadn’t expected Alex to stand in front of an entire boardroom and pull the trigger himself.
“First,” Alex continued, switching the slide, “let’s look at some numbers.”
Charts filled the screen—methodical, precise, devastating.
“These are Hunter Industries’ true core earnings over the last three months. Thirty percent lower than their public reports.” He clicked again. “Here are the offshore liabilities they concealed.” Another click. “And here is preliminary evidence of their attempts to obtain our proprietary data through improper channels.”
Each slide hit like a blade. The board members leaned forward, frowning, murmuring, recalculating. Blake’s bluster about scandal paled instantly against the hard math glowing on the screen.
Blake lunged to interrupt. “Alex, stop twisting the narrative. The issue here is your misconduct—your reputation—”
Alex ignored him. He clicked again.
“Now,” he said, “let’s shift our attention from empty threats to something that actually matters to this company.”
The screen changed.
“Two months ago, when we faced a major PR crisis regarding our environmental standards, the story defused within forty-eight hours. The clarifying statement that every major outlet cited—the one that steered us toward an agreement with environmental groups—was drafted and negotiated by Isabella De Villeneuve.”
The murmurs grew louder. Isabella remained perfectly still, hands folded, eyes calm.
Another slide.
“These contemporary art acquisitions from last year—now valued at nearly triple our purchase price. The recommendation came from Ms. De Villeneuve.”
Another slide.
“These are the European family funds currently in confidential talks with us. Their introductions were made possible through Ms. De Villeneuve’s lineage and relationships—connections money alone cannot buy.”
The board was silent. Utterly captivated.
Alex’s gaze swept across the room, then settled on Isabella. His voice dropped, steady and resonant.
“Blake Hunter thought he could weaponize irrelevant personal matters against us. But he underestimated the value of the woman he tried to turn into a liability.”
He took a step toward her.
“Isabella De Villeneuve brings far more than a distinguished name. She has intelligence, resilience, impeccable judgment, and a network that positions us for unprecedented global expansion. These are strengths this company cannot afford to overlook.”
Then, in front of the entire board—and Blake’s slack-jawed disbelief—Alex stopped beside her chair, inclined his head, and extended his hand.
“Therefore,” he said, every word deliberate, “as Acting President of the Lawrence Group, I formally request that you, Isabella De Villeneuve, join us as an equal strategic partner. Not as a stepmother. Not as a figurehead. As a collaborator whose insight and influence are indispensable to the future of this company.”
It wasn’t a confession. It wasn’t romance.
It was coronation.
A shield. A vow. A declaration of her worth that no amount of scandal could taint.
Isabella looked up at him—this man who had stepped between her and the storm without a moment’s hesitation—and something bright shimmered in her eyes. She rose slowly, placed her hand in his, and spoke clearly enough for everyone to hear.
“It would be my honor, Mr. Pierce. I accept.”
Applause erupted—hesitant at first, then swelling until the room trembled with it. Blake Hunter’s face drained of color. The photo he thought would end Alex’s career had just been turned into a pyre for his own.
Alex did not look at Blake.
He only held Isabella’s hand, steady and unyielding, his eyes locked on hers as the boardroom applauded around them.
In that moment, beneath the weight of every watching gaze, the two of them stood as something more than allies.
It wasn’t love declared.
But it was love protected.
And everyone in the room felt it.
